Going from 'Flab to Fab'!

Hey Milieu Pals,

About six weeks a go, I made a commitment to myself, family and certain friends. Simply put, I 'officially' decided to become, look and feel healthier. Gone are the days of talking about becoming fit. Now my days are filled with the actions to put those planned commitments in place!

As a result, I created the Facebook group 'Flab to Fab' - Going from 'Flabby' to 'Fabulous' in 16 weeks! The challenge commenced on Monday the 4th August 2008 and is planned to finish on Friday 5th December 2008.

As you read this post, 11 weeks remain (including this week) in the 'Flab to Fab' challenge. Five weeks have past and the challenge is currently in its sixth week.

I cannot relay how much I have grown to enjoy weight lifting. When I am not in the gym working out, I think about working out in the gym. I have actually come to the point where all I want to do is work out! As a result my 'rest' days have become painstaking since I now consider them to be a waste of time - time I could use to improve my body. However, I know how important rest is to general health and muscle building. So fear not, I have not become a complete gym nut!

Personally, I cannot see a noticeable change in my body, not yet. However, Alfred, my personal trainer/garden keeper, assures me that changes are taking place and that even if I cannot see them, he can. Admittedly, I have become aware of my increase in strength over the last five weeks. Where once I could barely complete a single 30kg set (of 12 repetitions) on the 'fabled' bench press, I can now do three comfortable sets (each of 12 repetitions) of 70kg. That is a 133% increase in strength in five weeks, which is approximately a 27% increase in strength per week... oh my word... I have just realised that is pretty good (at least I think so)! I have not worked it out until now! LOL! AWESOME! As I am sure you can tell, I am rather ecstatic about this improvement and cannot wait to become even stronger!

The best part about this process is that I am not alone. Within the last several weeks I have recruited and persuaded several friends and family members to go from 'Flab to Fab'. Granted we all have different goals, however it is the knowledge that I am not alone in this endeavour, which has helped me tremendously in terms of motivation and general focus.

At the end of the 16 week period, I will be posting my before and after photographs here, on Hans' Milieu, and on the 'Flab to Fab' Facebook group. Anyone who knows me will realise that this act, in itself, is already quite a leap forward since I am very private when it comes to my upper body (this is purely because of 'medical' reasons).

Anyway Milieu Pals, wish me luck. I only have 10 and a half weeks to go before the 'big reveal'! Heh heh!

A soap opera life... "Restless Young Lives"

Hey Milieu Pals,

Have you ever felt like your life was playing out like an episode of a soap opera/television series? I cannot tell you how many times I have felt or thought this way. With this statement in mind, it is safe to assume that writers, particularly for television shows, must imbue certain aspects of their personal lives into the stories which they tell.

Although Hans' Milieu is supposed to offer some insight into the mind and life of yours truly (Hans Haupt), why should it not also be a gateway into the lives of those who play a part in shaping Hans' Milieu? Thus, without further ado, I present to you, the very first episode of the delightfully fictional: Restless Young Lives (RYL).

Restless Young LivesImage:United States penny, obverse, 2002.jpg

Penelope "Penny" Diaz (Dee-Az) is a twenty-something necklace lover who is a humble store clerk by day, with co-workers Germ and Pain, and a religious atheist by nightfall. She insists that she knows how to drive, arguably most women do, yet has failed, on more than three occasions, to obtain a grade higher than her 'Learners'. Never-the-less, Penny is a resilient young woman who insists that life always hands her the short end of the stick. In actuality, all the sticks are there, Penny just keeps picking the one with the shortest end.

To make up for her perpetually short 'stick ended' life, and to especially prove the 'higher powers' that all is not lost, Penny is on a mission to find Love. Unbeknownst to Penny, Love is, rather unfortunately, holidaying in the Maldives. As fate would have it Penny did not receive Love's telegram, courtesy of the South African postal service.

Although some may now regard Penny's search for Love as a futile endeavour, since Love is away, the universal truth remains: what one does not know, cannot figuratively hurt them. As luck would have it, Penny found two men, Rudd and Ian, both willing to help her find 'love'. As a result Penny has resorted to 'finding' Love in the only way she knows how, by making it. If you think about it, it actually makes sense. Love was absent, so she made some 'love' to fill the void. However, since Penny has no inkling that Love is away and thoroughly enjoying a vigorously refreshing 'Virgin Colada' on some deserted beach, Penny is, in fact, just having sex. Just in case you were wondering, Ian is married and Rudd lives with Penny's boss! The dilemma, you ask? Who will Penny ultimately pick to be the one, is Pain her real brother... and who the heck is Germ and what is his deal?

There is a lot more to tell Milieu Pals. I could not give away everything in the first episode, even though I would have loved to! Tune in again soon for the next episode of: Restless Young Lives, exclusive to Hans' Milieu!

Music Monday - Vivaciously Varietal Vibes!

Hey Milieu Pals,

It is Music Monday and thus time for another Vivaciously Varietal Vibe!

Music Monday -

  • This weeks flavour: Pop

  • Artist: Rihanna

  • Album: Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded

  • Song: Disturbia

  • Rationale: This week I chose 'Disturbia' by Rihanna, simply because I think it is quite a cool song! Unfortunately it is one of three songs that are only available on the 'Reloaded' edition of Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad album.

As always, whenever I post about Vivaciously Varietal Vibes on Music Monday's, I usually link the photograph, of the featured songs album, to a website which contains the lyrics of the Vivaciously Varietal Vibe! However, this week I used a new photograph 'plug-in' for Windows Live Writer and thus was unable to embed the link into the photograph of the album cover. Never-the-less I did hyperlink the name of the song to a page displaying the lyrics of the song. So if you would like to know the words to this weeks featured song, simply click on the name of the song.

Music Monday - Vivaciously Varietal Vibes!

Hey Milieu Pals,

It is Music Monday and thus time for another Vivaciously Varietal Vibe!

Music Monday -   Ryan Cabrera - The Moon Under Water

  • This weeks flavour: Pop/Rock
  • Artist: Ryan Cabrera
  • Album: The Moon Under Water
  • Song: Enemies
  • Rationale: Ryan Cabrera is an artist I found using the Zune Marketplace. Recently I have delved into the digital distribution of media. I usually prefer to have the tangible CD, however, purchasing and downloading an album from an online marketplace is instantaneous not to mention convenient. As a result I now buy almost all of my music through the Zune Marketplace but only if it is DRM free. Ryan Cabrera's album is great, in my opinion, and happens to be one of the first albums I have ever purchased and 'digitally' downloaded.

As always, whenever I post about Vivaciously Varietal Vibes on Music Monday's, I link the photograph, of the featured songs album, to a website which contains the lyrics of the Vivaciously Varietal Vibe! So if you would like to know the words to the featured songs, simply click on the album cover associated with each entry.

Officially a permutation of "5"!

Hey Milieu Pals,

23 - a permutation of 5?Today, as many of you may know or have guessed, is my birthday. Not just any birthday, but my 23rd birthday. As of 9:00 (9am) this morning I have officially become a permutation of the number "5".

I have been showered with warm thoughts, love and greetings from family and friends alike; and, as always, have been spoilt rotten ;-)

Today was a rather relaxed day and extremely enjoyable. My family, myself and two cousins (Dillon and Jean-Michel) ate at Macedonia's in Bedford for lunch, then watched 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull' and ended the evening off at 'Ciao Baby Cucina'. Needless to say, we are all stuffed. Yet, we somehow managed to make room for the carrot cake and cheese cake that my mom made especially for my birthday! Heh heh heh!

With regards to the number '23' and its various permutations, I found this interesting little tidbit of information from 'Wikipedia' (yes, I know it is not the most reliable source of information, but it is interesting none the less) labelled as the 'Law Of Fives':

Law of Fives

The Law of Fives is summarized in the Principia Discordia:

The Law of Fives states simply that: All things happen in fives, or are divisible by or are multiples of five, or are somehow directly or indirectly appropriate to 5

The Law of Fives is never wrong.

Malaclypse the Younger, Principia Discordia, Page 00016

The Law of Fives as quoted uses the word "Five" five times.

Like most of Discordianism, the Law of Fives appears on the surface to be either some sort of weird joke, or bizarre supernaturalism; but under this, it may help clarify the Discordian view of how the human mind works; Lord Omar is quoted later on the same page as having written, "I find the Law of Fives to be more and more manifest the harder I look."

Appendix Beth of Robert Shea's and Robert Anton Wilson's The Illuminatus! Trilogy considers some of the numerology of Discordianism, and the question of what would happen to the Law of Fives if everyone had six fingers on each hand. The authors suggest that the real Law of Fives may be that everything can be related to the number five if you try hard enough. Sometimes the steps required may be highly convoluted.

Another way of looking at the Law of Fives is as a symbol for the observation of reality changing that which is being observed in the observer's mind. Just as how when one looks for fives in reality, one finds them, so will one find conspiracies, ways to determine when the apocalypse will come, and so on and so forth when one decides to look for them. It cannot be wrong, because it proves itself reflexively when looked at through this lens.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I have changed the Vivaciously Varietal Vibe!

  • This weeks flavour: Pop/Rock Madonna - Hard Candy
  • Artist: Madonna
  • Album: Hard Candy
  • Song: Miles Away
  • Rationale: Okay, everyone knows of Madonna and has listened to at least one of her songs over her many years as an artist. If you have not, then please crawl out of the rock you have been hiding under for the last decade and a half, find a music store and educate yourself on the Queen of Pop! The reason why I chose Miles Away is simple because it is one of the better tracks on 'Hard Candy'. In all honesty, I do think that this is one of Madge's weakest albums to date and was simply created to cash in on her fans and current music industry trends (AKA Timbaland-isation of songs). Granted the album will do incredibly well, there is no doubt about that - she is Madonna after all - however the album lacks substance. That is the simple truth.

As always, whenever I post about Vivaciously Varietal Vibes on Hans' Milieu, I link the photograph, of the featured songs album, to a website which contains the lyrics of the Vivaciously Varietal Vibe! So if you would like to know the words to the featured songs, simply click on the album cover associated with each entry.

That is it for now Milieu Pals, only because I am a fan of LOST and have only started watching season four and really want to continue watching the rest of it ;-)

Until the next post Milieu Pals!

Where has the time gone...

Hey Milieu Pals,

Good grief... it sure has been a long time since I last updated my blog. Almost four months in fact. Man... how ridiculous is that. Over 110 days, 17 weeks, 3 lunar cycles... almost a third of the year!

Okay, there have been a multitude of reasons as to why Hans' Milieu has not been updated, in no part thanks to Helkom Telkom and Eskum Eskom. However, let us just put the past in its rightful place on the shelf next to forgotten and focus on the pre-emptive future of this blog. That sound good? Great (I love rhetorical questions, heh heh heh)!

The Number "Five"

The number '5'. For those who do not know, this is my favourite number. Why? Simply put, because I was born on the 5th June 1985 - my birthday begins with a five and ends with a five. Additionally, the number five is supposed to be my astrological lucky number which is meant to correspond to my Zodiacal constellation of Gemini. Furthermore, according to the dream-dictionary.org, the number 'Five' is traditionally representative of study and learning. It is also regarded as an optimistic number, and the number of justice. Do you see now why this is such a great number? ;-)

This year I turn 23, which, you may have noticed, is a sum of five - 'Five-ism' at its best. Therefore, I believe that my 23rd birthday is one of great significance and importance. As a result I planned to have a rather different and exciting event to celebrate my age. However, due to extraneous variables outside of my control, it became apparent that I would not be able to have my birthday party on the 7th June as previously planned. Instead, the date for my party was moved back a week to the 14th June. Yes Milieu Pals... the 14th, 1+4=5. Coincidence? I think not! Some strange kind of cosmically energised divine intervention with a greater purpose? A resounding "heck yeah"! This is the '
