Maddie is six weeks old!
Well - it's so hard to believe that little Maddie already six weeks old. I was over to visit her, Shanna and Cody on Sunday, February 4th and we had a little photo shoot. It's been something me and Shanna have been attempting for a little while now but as everyone knows you work with the baby's schedule - the baby doesn't work on your schedule!  It was quite a fun photo shoot - I took a LOT of pictures - around 160 of them - and that was after deleting a lot of the blurry ones. Maddie was very well behaved through the whole thing - even after having my lens in her face and Cody and Shanna behind me snapping away!  And even after going through 3 costume changes and multiple poses. Even Oscar the kitty got into the action - although he mainly watched from the sidelines.

The pictures are in the photo album over on the side. While I love ALL of the shots (yes- I'm biased) my favorites are below.
Enjoy!

The Thirteenth Tale

I picked this book up at Indigo right before Christmas. It was displayed at the counter as Heather's pick and the girl at the counter told me that it was really good and that because it was "Heather's Pick", if I didn't like it I could return it to Indigo for a full refund. The last "Heather's Pick" I read was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and it is one of my all time favorite books so I decided to take a chance.

I finally got around to reading it this week when I was sent to Ottawa for a meeting. From the time I cracked it on the plane, I was enthralled - the entire book had me hooked right until the end. It's a hard book to describe - but if I had to categorize it I would place it under the mystery category.

My only complaint about it was that at times I found it just a bit hard to follow as it was written in the first person and the sub-plot was also told in the first person. The first time it switched to the sub-plot I had to go back and re-read and make sure I knew who it was that was talking.

Since I generally suck at summaries - below is the summary from the Indigo site.

It's a good read - and something a little different - I recommend checking it out!

From the indigo site:

Biographer Margaret Lea returns one night to her apartment above her father''s antiquarian bookshop. On her steps she finds a letter. It is a hand-written request from one of Britain’s most prolific and well-loved novelists. Vida Winter, gravely ill, wants to recount her life story before it is too late, and she wants Margaret to be the one to capture her history. The request takes Margaret by surprise–she doesn’t know the author, nor has she read any of Miss Winter’s dozens of novels.
Late one night, while pondering whether to accept the task of recording Miss Winter’s personal story, Margaret begins to read her father’s rare copy of Miss Winter’s Thirteen Tales of Change and Desperation. She is spellbound by the stories and confused when she realizes the book only contains twelve stories. Where is the thirteenth tale? Intrigued, Margaret agrees to meet Miss Winter and act as her biographer.
As Vida Winter unfolds her story, she shares with Margaret the dark family secrets that she has long kept hidden as she remembers her days at Angelfield, the now burnt-out estate that was her childhood home. Margaret carefully records Miss Winter’s account and finds herself more and more deeply immersed in the strange and troubling story. In the end, both women have to confront their pasts and the weight of family secrets. As well as the ghosts that haunt them still.

A New Year
And so a new year begins today. Jaunary 1st 2007 - what will the new year bring? There could be happiness and joy. It could be a time of change for a lot of us. Change is a good thing - when approached properly.

Folks will be makinig resolutions for the coming year - I'm not sure if I will or not - I know it's something you're supposed to BEFORE the first of January, but it is something I need to think on. There are standard resolutions that everyone says they are making - the old regulars - lose weight and get out of debt - which are two things I should do - but I prefer my resolutions to be more fun in nature. Like this year I would like to explore photography more - learn more about it and take more pictures.

I also want to have more contentment in my life - I mean I am pretty content now but things throw me for a loop. It happens much too easily. I guess I need to grow a thicker skin - being a cancer though it's hard for that to happen. We crabs are very sensitive. It's been something that I've had a problem with all my life. I know I can't get rid of being sensitive all the time but I need to control it better.

But then I also need to start speaking my mind better - but of course picking and choosing when to say things - there is moments for anything.

Ah - well I guess there are a few resolutions in there - but I still have to mull things over. Decide if I want to change anything this year.

Favorite Christmas TV special
'Tis the season for reruns on TV and the time for those Christmas specials to be aired on various channels across the dial. Every year there are the new shows that try to find a place in the hearts of many - but every year there are also the old stand-bys - the classics that most everyone loves despite their age. Which favorite is yours? Perhaps it's Charlie Brown, or Rudolph or even Frosty the Snowman. But mine has to be Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Even today - at the ripe old age of 28 - when December rolls around I get a niggling feeling in my brain that it's the season for the Grinch.

For as long as I can remember I've loved the Grinch. I expect it started with the book first - my favorite childhood author was Dr. Seuss and I had all of his classics - including the Grinch who Stole Christmas. I mean - I also enjoyed the Garfield Christmas and Merry Christmas Charlie Brown but nothing holds a candle to the Grinch. I'm not sure why - but it's now the only Christmas special that I make sure I find out when it is on and try to watch it. I've toyed with the idea of getting it on DVD so that I am not tied to the schedule of CBC but I can't bring myself to do it. There is just something special for me about settling in and watching it on CBC - it always has to be on that channel as well because as a kid we only had the two channels and it was always on CBC - can't break with tradition now can I?

I love when the Grinch creeps into the houses down in Whoville and starts to take everything. I hold my breath when Cindy Lou Who finds him, and grumble when he doesn't even leave the crumb for the mouse. And then inevitably at the end I get all verklemped when his heart grows three sizes that day. When he realizes that Christmas can still come without ribbons and tags and it can come without packages, boxes or bags! And having the voice talents of Boris Karloff as the grinch and singing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" - I love it!

Ah the childhood memories flood back each time I watch the Grinch - it is one of the best parts of Christmas for me without a doubt.

You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Author: Dr. Seuss

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.
Mr. Grinch.

You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel.

You're a monster, Mr. Grinch.
Your heart's an empty hole.
