WordCamp Chicago ‘09
I’m excited to be able to forward the announcement of WordCamp Chicago - 2009 coming to the Chicagoland area soon! I am co-organizing the event with my friends, Brian Gardner (of Revolution Theme), Cory Miller (of iThemes) and Wendy Piersall of Sparkplugging.com…
If you don’t already know what a WordCamp is - here is the description from the official WordCamp site:
WordCamp is a conference type of event that focuses squarely on everything WordPress. Everyone from casual end users all the way up to core developers show up to these events. These events are usually highlighted by speeches or keynotes by various people.
WordCamps appear all over the world and bring together passionate WordPress lovers from all over. From San Fransisco to Bangkok and the Philippines to the UK - they are just popping up all over the place!
WordCamps are (obviously) geared toward WordPress users and the aim is to provide a low cost event with high educational and information benefits. For WordCamp Chicago we are currently organizing some excellent speakers of authority on WordPress and expect a pretty high turn out that represents all levels of experience with the WordPress platform, from novice level to advanced/guru level - and all points in between!
I’m very excited to be co-organizing this event with such a talented pool of people and am really looking forward to meeting everyone who attends! I’m also expecting there to be some fun WordPress For Dummies goodies there, as well. We are still in the very preliminary planning stages, and as soon as we get an idea as to the numbers of people interested in attending, we’ll be announcing the date, time and location of the event. That announcement is coming very soon so just hang tight!
Would you be interested in attending a WordCamp in Chicago? We are currently trying to get a feel for how many attendees we should expect - so if you are interested - check out the WordCamp Chicago post here, and leave your comment : Want to attend WordCamp-Chicago? Let us know!
I really hope to see you there!

Dr Mom Online - WordPress Design
Colleen runs a website and blog at Dr. Mom Online where she writes about common sense health tips, nutrition information, and exercise secrets from an experienced mom and doctor, specializing in optimal health & wellness! She approached E.Webscapes to design a custom WordPress theme for her site that would allow her to present a site rich in content and featuring related affiliate links/products. Dino recently completed and launched her new site design.
Dino created a really dynamic theme for Colleen! A really clean and sharp 3-column design with vibrant colors and a soft feminine touch, which is just what Colleen had requested. She wanted to make the site more organized and clean and emphasize Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in the underlying code - which is exactly what Dino did for her.
Colleen was really thrilled with the initial design work we presented to her in the beginning. In fact, these are her exact words when she saw our initial presentation: “OK, have you EVER had a client who took one look and said, “I love it! Let’s run with it!!!”. Sometimes, the planets are all aligned in just the right and perfect order!
Dino really worked hard with Colleen to integrate all of the elements she needed on her site. Including her affiliate links, banners and all of the rest of her monetization efforts on her site, and her subscription newsletter she uses to help build, and retain, her readership.
We are all really thrilled with the way the site turned out - - Collen thinks that Dino did just a fantastic job on her new site…and on that point, I will have to agree!

Vivid N Urban WordPress Custom Theme
Brandon runs an online magazine that he hopes to take to print in a few months. To accomplish that, he needed a site up and running to showcase his writing and video coverage of events, articles and telephone interviews, music reviews, as well as have room for a couple other writers to blog or add articles. We recently completed the custom design for his site at Vivid N Urban Magazine, powered by WordPress.
The front page of the site is set up, cleanly, in a four-column layout to display several headlines from the multiple categories they have set up within their WordPress blog, as well as videos and other content. Once you click through on any of the headlines, you’re presented with a nicely structured 2 column layout that gives them ample space to display their content, links and advertiser information.
We also helped Brandon integrate social media into his site by adding Facebook, Del.icio.us and Subscription options that helps him retain, and grow, his audience. We also added in additional bits of functionality that will help him grow traffic through SEO Optimization, Google Sitemaps, social media sharing and Feedburner RSS handling.
Brandon was an extremely appreciative client and very happy with the results of his site design and structure. We wish him the best of luck with his site and can’t wait for the time when the magazine is in print form!

Mother-in-Law Hell : WordPress Site Design
E.Webscapes was approached by Patty of Mother-in-Law Hell to do a full design of their WordPress powered site, as well as several custom implementations of site features with some magazine-type theming, custom post submission forms and a customized WordPress administration panel. Patty was looking for something very colorful, retro and funky. . .
Mother-in-Law Hell is a blog that provides advice to daughters-in-law who are having problems getting along with their Mother-in-Law. I guess this must be a common issue, because Patty’s site has really taken off! First, I provided her with graphic design that she was really thrilled with in a color scheme of oranges, yellows, greens and pinks that she really liked. The illustration of the old lady on the blog (symbolizing the mother-in-law from HELL!) was done by an outside artist (whose name I wish I had, but don’t) - and I took that custom illustration and integrated it into the rest of my design.
After the design work was completed, I went to work on the development of the site. It’s not set up like a ‘typical’ WordPress blog. You’ll notice the front page pulls in one of the most recent requests for advice and then pulls in one post from each of her different categories by using an excerpt and image icons for each of the categories.
I also included customized submission forms so that visitors to her site can submit articles and posts directly from her blog. Those post submissions get submitted as moderated posts that she is able to login and review, then publish. This creates a lot of great interactivity on her blog and allows her readers to post requests for advice in dealing with their own Mother-in-Law Hell situation!
I also customized the design of the back-end of her WordPress administration panel, so when her users login to her site, the admin panel is custom branded to give it a consistent flow. Check out the custom designed WordPress login form from her site:
We worked really closely with Patty to get the look and feel that she was going for. After a few iterations and mockups of the design work, Patty was really very happy with the end result. Here’s what she had to say:
I really LOVE the design:-)))This was what I was looking for!
Thank you so much!!! the site is awesome:-))
Thanks again lisa! BTW, I am a fan of your personal blog:-) I really like it and can’t wait for the updated wordpress book to come out. I got your other one and it’s been helping me alot.

Content Rich Book - WordPress Design
Jon Wuebben from Content Rich Book approached us to build a new website for him to support his new book, Content Rich. He wanted this site built on the WordPress platform to enable him to update and maintain his site with ease now, and in the future. Jon uses his blog to promote his book and his speaking services. . .
Jon had some very specific ideas in terms of the direction he wanted to take with his site. From a design stand point, he wanted a very clean, uncluttered look with lots of white space and a color scheme of blues and white; with a clean, easy to navigate site menu and a blog as a part of his site, but not the main page of his site. Dino built Jon’s site in WordPress and created a very nicely organized framework for the presentation of his content - including several static pages with the inclusion of a blog for easy updates and news.
Since we launched his site, Jon has returned a couple of time for some tweaks and additional work and he’s pleased with our service and skill each and every time he returns:
Thanks Dino…looks GREAT! really appreciate that. we can close the ticket.
Again, thanks for EVERYTHING…incredible service once more my friend!
Jon
Thanks so much, Jon - - BEST of luck with your new book!
