Canon 40D not dead
Canon rumors is saying that 2 new Canon SLR’s still valid, apparently from a valid source. Quote is also that “The 40D is safe for a while” so does that mean no replacement for Photokina.
However it doesn’t mean that the 40D still won’t be a “current” camera if a 50D is launched. The 400D was still in Canon’s lineup after the 450D was released and was for some time, though it didn’t seem logical, it’s certainly not unknown in other industries.
If the 40D stays positioned where it is, a higher spec 1.6 crop 50D could be the model to compete against the D300. On the other hand with a ‘low’ price recently of the 40D recently it could mean it’s just making room for a bigger brother.
Then all everyone wants to hear will be a 5D mk2 to go head to head with the D700 at a lower price level say £1500 / $2700 !

Canon 50D 26th August?
Northlight Images is posting a translation from Japan for a 50D. Is this a rehash of the dpreview post re Hawaii and the dealers being given a 50D preview, that was 15Mp, or are we seeing snippets of information slowly leaking out. There’ s been nothing coming out as a follow up to this, maybe its Non disclosure and lawyers calling the tune.
Anyway, the info;
- Annouced on 26th Aug (Start sellling in late Sept)
- 15.10 MP 3.0′ VGA monitor, 6.3FPS, 9 point AF, LV, improved dust-removal system(or improved LV as well)
- Body only:150000 Yen, With 17-65 200000 Yen, With 18-200 220000 Yen,18-200 lens 80000 Yen.
- Digic IV will be used in the upcoming IXUS but not on 50D.
That’s £730 / $1360 or so after checking exchange rates. There’s not much info to go on from the post, ok more megapixels but that’s not everything as most know.

No more Canon G9?
The Canon G9 has been listed as discontinued on the B&H website, so I guess the G10 is on it’s way? Or is there as Canon Rumors has posted the likelihood of a ‘GSI’, a super high end G series with a larger sensor size?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518209-REG/Canon_2082B001_PowerShot_G9_Digital_Camera.html
Northlight Images is reporting that the Canon 40D makes it to the ‘clearance section’ of the site of Camera action, a large Australian dealer. If you look, it’s still listed in the main Canon section but is this a real sign of stock clearance in advance of a new model? It’s all gone quiet on the rumour front if you’re looking for substance, some recent posts were saying late August so the clock is ticking down …….

Canon 50D rumor from Hawaii
There’s reports on dpreview of a new 50D in a post relating to a Canon USA dealers conference in Hawaii.
The 50D is coming, it was shown this week to camera store owners. Canon USA flew them to Hawaii to show it off, as well as the 18-200IS lens… It is being touted as a camera to go up against the D300 and will sell for a few hundred less maybe… dissapointing really, when everybody is expecting the 5D replacement, and they flew everyone to Hawaii…
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=28957814
Now that would be a nice price if it does compare to the D300 in performance, I think it would be pitching in at the right pricing point, it would be a good upgrade for 400D/450D users, maybe even the 40D buyers. It would also leave ground for Canon to pitch in with the 5D mk2.
There are also statements are that the 5D mk2 won’t be seen until the Photokina show in late September - that will keep people posting theories that Canon has ‘lost it’

Canon 7D with huge 21mp sensor?
From Canon rumors; they have been given the information regarding a 7D. It’s a new source so roll the dice and take your chances on the accuracy. It’s a strange spec if it’s called a 7D, the massive megapixel resolution would fit a smaller number 2D, 3D in Canon’s world….
Here’s the story so far.
“I work in a warehouse for a major American retailer and we were shipped 7D brochures by mistake. They were quickly repossessed before I could take one. There is also a product entry in our receiving system for the 7D. Theres no price attached to it.”
The 7D
* 21.1 MP FF
* Dual Digic III Processor
* ISO 100-6400 L:50 & H:12800
* 5 FPS
* 3″ High Resolution Screen (LCD)
* 19 point AF
* Liveview
* Viewfinder: 100% Coverage
* No pop-up flash
* Full weather sealing
* EF Lenses only

more Canon 5d mk2 rumours and Canon 50d specifications!
Dpreview is posting specs for a new Canon 5D mk2, a 50D and also 2 new lenses. There’s no pedigree as to where these specs are from and as usual it gathers comments of the ‘I don’t believe Canon will do anything of interest at Photokina’ variety….
After photography at a recent outdoor evening event I’d have liked a IS 24-70mm but with a L series I’m not sure the price would be attractive enough for me!

Nikon Coolpix P6000 released
Nikon has unveiled the Coolpix P6000, a new 13.5-million-pixel flagship digital compact with features including a raw format mode and built-in GPS ‘geotagging’ technology. The P6000 is aimed at SLR users and professional photographers seeking the ‘ultimate compact’, according to Nikon. It replaces the 5100 model.
Due out in the UK next month (September) priced £429.99 the P6000 boasts an ‘SLR-like’ grip and a lens delivering the 35mm viewing angle equivalent of a 28-112mm lens. The optic carries a maximum aperture of f2/7 and a lens-shift Vibration Reduction system. It has an impressive maximum equivalent ISO sensitivity of 6400 (at a maximum resolution of 3MP), six digital filter effect colour options and macro shooting down to 2cm.
The camera includes manual exposure and focusing and a hotshoe for external flash. Ideal features for the experienced photographer who doesn’t want to carry around their SLR all day. The P6000 is compatible with all current Nikon flash units, up to and including the recently announced SB-900.
The GPS function attaches location information to image EXIF file data. This can then be viewed on websites capable of showing geotagged images such as Flickr. A ’standby’ mode is included to help save battery power when using the GPS option.

All’s quiet…
There’s not much in the rumourland for new Canon SLR at present. After posting about the preview in the USA, there is a post on a Danish site saying there is a Canon announcement on the 26th August. No other details really.
There is the 5D mk2 book raising it’s head again with various posts. It’s prelaunch info is appearing on websites such as Borders, Barnes & Noble etc. but there’s some question of the reliability of the source data as the ISBN is showing the 1000D.

Canon 5D mk2 rumor – Product is out there…
A new Canon 5D mk2 post on photography-on-the.net from a USA originated post, from someone who has been to a Canon prelaunch (and signed a NDA – Non Disclosure Agreement) for new 5D, P&S, Lenses etc.
All cellphones and cameras (and actually anything metallic) has to be left outside in little trays. Go into the room get numbered copies of some product sheets. Quick scan Product 3 Canon 5D replacement - no picture. Person walks up to a dais, starts talking and going though products. Some new P&S from Canon, G10/11/12 something….new FS lens, then “5D replacement” they talk about features, which basically boils down to “more of everything” but not quite what say the 40D has in burst rates. Better ISO, more pixels (more than 12 less than 16), then moves onto another lens and some crap about flashes. Upon leaving I asked how they got my name and number etc. Registration cards, vendor feedback based on purchases, and clicking that little box that says “share my info with selected partners”. In doing a quick check with some of the other people in the room, most were professionals, some were “hobbyists” that “spent much more than average” in the last 2 quarters. And that is all I have to report, a lot less exciting than I expected, and a lot less exciting then the little mail thing looked like. They did say they were having about 4 more of these, so if you get it and can go I would…but don’t expect much. These people said that late August very early September was the release date for the “cameras” so it is what it is.

Several places are also showing posts with the price of the 5D rising in the US, retailers getting the most out of buyers for the last few 5D’s before they change?
