World's first transplant of a whole organ grown in lab
Of-course thelma, agreed. EVERYONE should have the medical care that they require. I want everyone to live as healthy and long as possible...hence my concern about the fact that we are generally NOT healthy. I just think that some of this medical technology should not, on a large scale, precede our understanding and ability to look after ourselves. It's kind of a "cart before the horse" sort of thing.
Rethinking Cholesterol

Illuminatus...wouldn't someone be more likely to tell tall-tales about themselves rather than other people??
"Divinity amongst us" is what some people say about him. Aren't we ALL divine??
I could be wrong, but my concern is that although he may be helping some, he may be ripping off and conning millions more.
HELP! Scammed by sara freder!!!
Somehow I fell for a free horoscope or something similar many years ago, although I never puechased anything of her. I just found it extremly shallow but this one mistakemresulted in spam for the better time of a year or so. All there is to do is block and delete it, eventually it will fade out although you have to be patient about it.
The easiest thing to do must be contacting your bank and have them stop her from drawing money from your account.

Diabetes
Yesterday in my opinion we made great leaps in drawing closer to a cure for all diabetics. I have been following stem cell developments for years.
I looked back the forums and found this post from which I have taken a quote.
Quote:I would rather wait for the procedure which is being developed as we speak.
The August 2004 Lancet discussed the replacement of a German mouth-cancer patient?s removed jawbone. Using his own stem cells, doctors spent seven weeks growing him a new mandible around wire mesh. Once implanted, he tested it by biting into a Frankfurter. He soon resumed eating normally.
Adult stem cells have helped some 60 paraplegics and quadriplegics regain sensation and movement. Stem cells from their own nasal cavities helped spinal-injury victims Laura Dominguez, Susan Fajt, and Erica Nader stand up and walk with braces.
This is the way to go for me Using his/her own stem cells
No rejection or allergic reaction worries.
Hopefully it wont be too long
So here we are 4 yrs later and yesterday this very encouraging piece of news hit the headlines concerning a trachea replacement. Same techniques would be used with pancreas replacement.Eventually.

Looks like I'm a little late too. But if you do it right a birthday celebration(or at least it's effects) should last a good 48 hours anyway.
Hope you had a fun one.

NASA's first Spacewalk about the International Space Station (ISS) did not go as well as planned, with Astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper losing to Space a US $100 000 Tool Bag.
Fellow Astronaut Stephen Bowen, who said he was responsible for making a final tether check of the Bag before the Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) began, said he was equally to blame for the mishap.
I find the loss amusing, as when i worked on Cars in the late sixties with my Father, an ex World War II Navy Seaman, whenever i dropped a Spanner, Nut etc., he would clip me about the Ears, stating "Out at Sea, if you drop something and it rolls off board into the Sea, how are you going to retrieve it, as it is lost forever".
So the Sea and Space have something in common, with lost Objects within their midsts.

Bell Labs and Roswell
(Note: This is a condensement of Jack Schulman's claims. I have yet to gather all citations, but I felt obliged to post it without too much waiting)
Jack Schulman grew up in the cradle of the industrial revolution. He fell in with the budding science crowd, and learned the trades. But he couldn't understand the gap between the brilliance of the technology, and the apparent lack of brilliance in their "inventors." His speculations gained evidence when he was asked to look over some files of an extraterrestrial space-capable craft. Then skeptical, he noticed a great deal of security around the subject.
Unwilling to keep such a secret, he publicized it, and became tightly wound in heavy military violent interrogation. Believing at that point that exposure more than privacy, might save his life; he spread it far and wide. He received anonymous collaborations, and connected the dots of a story that went from the depression to the Nazis, to Roswell, to the industrial revolution. His association with Bell Labs would pave the way for exposing a secret military operation called Z-division.
Now a little less of a whistleblower, Schulman still holds suspicion as though all those miraculous inventions just fell from the sky, or appeared out of nowhere in terms of the invention process. He retains advanced technology at the forefront of public development, and maintains that all of it came from over half a century ago.
Schulman grew up in New Jersey at the home of Jack Morton, and befriended Jack's son- through the early 60s. One day in 1972, Dr. Morton was found knocked unconscious and set afire in his volvo, without explanation. By the early 90s as a reputable computer hardware pioneer, Schulman was given the opportunity to investigate the Shopkeeper's Notebook of Bell Labs. All of it was centered around what could only be described as the reverse engineering of a craft in Roswell. The carbon-dating of the pages matched the date of the 1947 Roswell incident. The notebook was a centrepiece between computer technology and the nuclear age. After publishing his findings, he'd received anonymous faxes on a "Sky Station"- a nuclear hardened, nuclear equippable space station presumably existant since the late 40s. He'd also receive a smashed office window with this entire office destroyed and the contents stolen. He'd receive a constant array of death threats to his family and his life.
If all of this seems too fantastical- the unsolved mystery remains as to how the invention of the integrated circuit and the dawn of the nuclear age could have suddenly appeared with a few men in New Jersey going from Bell Labs to the most secretive military operations through the Cold War.

Having a Seat by the Heater
The stool was your grandfather's stool that he carried deer and squirrel hunting with him. It is small and easy to carry. He would sit on that stool under a tree watching for a deer or squirrels. If the weather was cold, many times he would build a small fire in front of himself. Look on the stool legs and see if you see scratch marks where he would strike a match with which to light his pipe. You were his favorite granddaughter.

Family
A few weeks ago I went to a beautiful wedding. My first husband's sister was the bride. Let me give you a little background to this.
Ten years ago Dave & I told his Mum that we were divorcing. She just said to me, "You're not getting rid of us that easily!". Thank goodness for that. Dave & I were best friends for nine years, whether we were together, single or marrying other people. The he met Jade and stopped speaking to me, ending our friendship in a bizarre, nasty and lying e-mail.
The rest of Dave's family though, true to their word, have always been my family too. My children who are not related to them at all, call Dave's Mum "Nanna" and were both in the bridal party the other weekend...the only kids to be involved. My second husband (we are also divorced but are together-ish - he lives in another town for work) is always welcome at their get togethers as well and came to the wedding.
I cannot begin to paint a picture of the dynamics in this group. Yes they fight sometimes but they are close and have fun!! (And arguing usually stems from caring, either about the person or what they think.) There are her five children, their partners, cousins, half-this, step-that, etc. ...and we have all been through a lot. Maybe that is why we appreciate eachother & what we have so much. How lucky am I?
Now on the other side of the pendulum...
Kathryn is twelve and has raised herself. She is friendly with my kids but the reason she is here all of the time is so that she can feel safe and wanted. She does not own a pair of socks, shorts or a hat. Her parents spend any money from the govt. on acohol, cigarettes and drugs...oh, and high tech. games. They have nothing else. They do nothing else. Kathryn had never heard the word "cavity" until yesterday. She gets into their appartment by the key left in the lock on the outside of the door. Go figure.
She is severely asthmatic but she always smells strongly of her parent's smoke. Kathryn's parents do not care where she is, when she's out or who she's with. They don't even ask.
This kid is lacking in some social graces, which is understandable as she was not brought up with any. Behind the protective wall she has around herself Kathryn is smart, caring, artistic, inventive and determined. Who would not want a kid like that?
It feels like I should end this with some insightful words on what family is. Everything I can think of sounds cliche, corny or like it's out of a Disney matinee.
Think about the people in your life. Those you consider family, reated or not...treasure them.

What did you see today - Part V
Today, while in a shop at Worting, near Basingstoke, I saw this big ol' bumble bee. He/she was a good inch (25mm) + long. Inside the shop, it was examining the snacks, as were LCM and I.

Why not celebrate new species?!
Oh, my Dad has all of Dawkins stuff, and went through a period when he would NOT shut-up about those books. I've seen some of the docos he's done & he is good...but maybe needs to lighten up just a tad!! Dawkins would possibly think I'm nuts too, which is just fine with me.
